» World Champion Richardson to face Countrymen in 110m Hurdles at NTL’s DBI
Edmonton - The National Track League’s Donovan Bailey Invitational will play host to USA’s best 110-metre hurdlers as 2011 World Champion Jason Richardson is set to take on Terrance Trammell and an all-star line-up that includes Dexter Faulk, Jeff Porter and Joel Brown from the USA, as well as Canadians Damian Warner and Ingvar Moseley and Jamaica’s Richard Philips. The action will happen at Foote Field on Saturday, June 16, between 1:30 - 4:30 PM.
Richardson, the reigning World Champion in the 110-metre hurdles, has a personal best of 13.04 set in 2011. However, the competition between him and Trammell has been fierce for years. Both athletes attended the University of South Carolina, and since 2008, races featuring Richardson vs. Trammell are tied at two apiece. At the 2011 US World Trials, only .01 separated the two for the final spot on Team USA’s World Championship team. Trammell’s personal best of 12.95 was set in 2007, he is a two-time Olympic silver medalist (2000, 2004). He last competed in Edmonton at the 2001 World Championships.
“Richardson is the second world champion confirmed for the DBI,” says Peter Ogilvie, Meet Director and Executive Director of Athletics Alberta. “Between him and his competition, there’s an excellent chance we’ll see a new record for the event in Canada.” The current Canadian record for the 110mH is 13.08, which was set by Mark McKoy in 1993. He won Olympic Gold for the event in 1992. The Olympic “A” standard for Canadians this year is 13.52, so there is an opportunity for Warner and Moseley to attain the standard on June 16.
“The focus may be on Richardson and Trammell,” says Ogilvie, “but Dexter Faulk beat Trammell just ten days ago in Atlanta. The field is tight. It’s going to be an exciting event.”
For Canadians, the Donovan Bailey Invitational is an opportunity to witness and support Canadian athletes in their quest for Olympic glory at the London 2012 Olympics, which run July 27 to August 12, 2012. The Donovan Bailey Invitational is now part of the new Edmonton International Athletics Festival, which runs May 25 to June 25.
