» Frequently Asked Questions
Is there any charge for the program?
There is $10 entry fee for individuals to take part in the Hershey’s Provincial Track & Field Games. If your school is not a registered member school of Athletics Alberta, there is a $50 school registration fee to become a member school of the association. This entitles your students to participate in any Athletics Alberta sanctioned track & field meets during the school year.
Where and when is the Hershey' Provincial Track & Field Games?
Saturday, June 18, 2011 at University of Alberta's Foote Field in Edmonton.
Do I, as a teacher/local meet organizer, have to attend the Hershey's Provincial Track & Field Games?
No. We would love to have you attend and know your students would love to have you there but realize that your attendance is not always going to be possible. Competitors in the provincial finals will all have an individual envelope containing all the information they will need to be able to compete.
How many athletes from each meet will be eligible to advance to the Hershey's Provincial Track & Field Games?
The Hershey's Provincial Track & Field Games will have competition for athletes aged 9 – 14 as of Dec 31st, 2010. The top 3 athletes in each event at a school meet will be able to advance (i.e.- 3 boys & 3 girls per event). For other meets that involve athletes from a number of schools (e.g. Medicine Hat, Calgary, Grande Prairie, Edmonton and Ponoka), the top 4 finishers in each event will be eligible to advance.
What will be the rewards for competitors in the Hershey's Provincial Track & Field Games?
Most importantly the opportunity to compete at a high level and to receive recognition as being among the finest young athletes in the province. On a more practical level each competitor receives a Provincial Finalist t-shirt, a certificate of participation and some Hershey’s goodies.
We don’t have access to an “official” track? Can we still put on a meet?
Absolutely! The emphasis in this program is on participation. Local meets can take place in a variety of environments. School fields make excellent locations. Race distances do not even have to be exact – as long as all your participants compete under the same conditions it does not really matter if your 50 metre run is actually 45 metres or 55 metres. The local meet is an opportunity for your students to take part – when they compete in the Provincial Championships they will be on an “official” track with very accurate measurements. It is the results from the Provincial Games that count towards selection for the North American Finals.
Do I have to include all events for all age groups?
No. If you include any 3 of the Hershey events it can be registered as a Hershey Meet. Many schools already have track meets that include at least 3 of these events. A Hershey Meet can easily be incorporated into an existing track meet as long as results are available that reflect the top performers in the Hershey age groups.
