What does sanctioning a race/ meet mean?

A “Sanction” is an official designation issued by Athletics Alberta, which approves and licenses the holding of a competitive and recreational road running, cross country running and track & field events in the Province of Alberta.

The sanction is not only a contract in which provides event consistency in following national and international rules and regulations of our sport but more importantly it acknowledges the need to provide a safe environment for the participants and spectators.

Once an event has satisfied the sanction requirements, the event's application for sanction is approved.

What does race course certification mean?

Race course certification is critical in the development and production of road race courses that have accurately measured distances. For any road running performance to be accepted as a record or be nationally ranked, it must be run on a certified course. In addition, certification is very important to the average road racer, as well as, those of exceptional speed.

Most runners like to compare performances run on different courses, and such comparisons are difficult if course distances are not reliable. As you can appreciate, no one can truly establish a personal best if the course distance is not accurate.

Race course certification is used around the world, by which a course is measured according to international standards and the measurement data is reviewed by a recognized certifier. Once the data is verified and accepted, a certificate with a course ID number is sent to the measurer, who then forwards a copy to the race director for final confirmation.

Having your race course certified will distinguish your event from many others and will allow for greater recognition within the road running local and international community at large.
